ST. LUKE’S SCHOOL: CROSSING BOUNDARIES AND BUILDING BRIDGES

May 25, 2021 - New York, NY
Sponsors: St. Luke’s School and Live Out Loud
Panelists: Paul Bowden, Brad Braxton, and Monica Ellis, Marilyn Bennett
Moderated by: Leo Preziosi Jr., Founder of Live Out Loud
”Courageous social justice work embraces intersectionality—the complex ways that our interlocking social identities foster both domination and liberation. The 1965 Selma Marches protested racist voting laws in the US. The 1969 Stonewall Uprising (which occurred not far from St. Luke’s School) catalyzed a national movement protesting rights for LGBTQ+ communities. This film brings these two historic liberation struggles into dialogue to illustrate the need for people to cross boundaries and build bridges in the quest for social justice and peace.” —St. Luke’s School

In partnership with Busboys and Poets Focus In! Film Series, co-executive producers Marilyn Bennett and the Rev. Gil Caldwell hosted a screening of From Selma to Stonewall: Are We There Yet? to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Following the film was an action-focused conversation between experienced leaders/activists about intersectional strategies for today. This humorous, thoughtful and inspiring time of storytelling and justice-carving affirmed the work of longtime activists and aimed to inspire new activists to get involved with the present day interweave of justice issues.
Footage of the panel discussion later became our second film resource, From Selma to Stonewall: Navigating the Way.
